Goldens 101

THE PERFECT FAMILY DOG

From the first day a golden puppy enters your home, they become part of your family. They are wonderful companions to both adults and children. Our family has had a number of the most popular breeds in our home and we all agree, Golden Retrievers are simply the best. Anyone who has owned a golden will tell you about their gentle, friendly and devoted spirit.

The American Kennel Club gives Golden Retrievers Excellent Ratings for:

Training

Goldens love to please. With time, patience, and love you can train your Golden to do just about anything.

Children

Golden Retrievers are one of the most tolerant and patient breeds with childrens' behavior.

Other Pets

Goldens are playful, but they make wonderful siblings for any other pets you may have in the home.

Is the Golden Retriever the Right Breed for you?

  • Moderate Maintenance: Grooming will include bathing, brushing, nail trimming.

  • Moderate Shedding: Routine brushing will help. Be prepared to vacuum as they shed during warm months.

  • Easy Training: Goldens are very attentive to their owners and want to please you through obedience. Expect fewer repetitions required when training this breed compared to others.

  • Good Watchdog Ability: Goldens will bark to alert their owners when an intruder is present. However, if a situation escalates, a Golden Retriever should not be depended on to defend or protect. They are not guard dogs.

  • High Affection: Golden Retrievers love to be around their owners. Whether they are curling up at your feet - or trying to cozy up on your lap - they simply love to be with you.

  • High Adaptability: Golden Retrievers handle change exceptionally well. This can include changes to living conditions, noise, weather, daily schedules and other variations in day-to-day life.

  • Moderate to High Energy: Golden Retrievers are sporting group dogs. During their younger years they have a high energy drive and are always ready for an adventure or playtime. Having a large space for them to run and play fetch and other games will be important for your dog to expend their energy safely.

  • Good for Hunting & Field Work: Golden Retrievers love to retrieve. With proper training, their athleticism and intelligence and gentle mouths make them the perfect bird dog companions.

  • Good for New Owners: This breed is well suited for those who are new dog owners.

  • Life Expectancy: A healthy Golden will live 10-12 years, with good care some may live even longer.

  • Full Grown Size: A full-grown male Golden Retriever will weigh between 65-75 lbs and measure 23-24" at withers (the top of his shoulders). A full-grown female Golden Retriever will weigh between 55-65 lbs and measure 21.5-22.5" at withers.
